I believe in the goodness of people, until they prove me wrong.
I believe that of instituitions as well.


The United Nations was formed in 1945, and these are their stated Preamble:

WE THE PEOPLES OF THE UNITED NATIONS DETERMINED

1. to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind, and

2. to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small, and

3. to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained, and

4. to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,

The UN has failed on ALL counts in this latest Mid East crisis. Their response has been appalling, as a world body entrusted with the moral duty of protecting its citizens, financed by the world to impartially distribute its resources.

Finally, a ceasefire has been brokered. But after 34 days of fighting? It is mind boogling. Are they that ineffective? This is what 34 days brought:

Lebanon deaths: About 1,000 - mostly civilians, women and children.
Israeli deaths: Soldiers: 114 (IDF) Civilians: 43 (IDF)
Lebanon displaced: 700,000 - 900,000 (UNHCR; Lebanese govt)
Israeli displaced: 500,000 (Human Rights Watch)
Lebanon damage: $2.5bn (Lebanese govt)
Israel damage: $1.1bn (Israeli govt)

What was the agenda behind these 34 days? In silent support of Israelie attacks? Because the US says give Israel more time? Red is the colour that bleeds and that's all the UN should care about.
